The Callanish Pipe Band was formed in the summer of 2003 under the leadership of Pipe Major John Mitchell.  Callanish is made up of pipers and drummers throughout the Central Valley who have an interest in performing and competing with musical excellence.  Members travel from as far as Vallejo, Sacramento, Turlock and Galt to practice in the band’s home in Modesto, California.  The name for the band is taken from a circle of stones on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland.  To the members of Callanish these stones represent the qualities needed to make up a top band: Endurance, Perseverance through Adversity, and Strength of Character.
